Story: The shell of strength
Written By Mermaid Eden
It was early afternoon, and I was swimming in my favourite lake. I loved the feel of the water against my skin and orange tail, and the sound of fish swimming around, too bad I grew legs when I came out. Suddenly, I saw something weird, there was a strange shell at the bottom of the water it was a beaded periwinkle; it looked ancient, almost regal. There was something strange about this one though; it was a dark, strong yellow colour. Slowly, I placed my gentle hands on the smooth surface of the yellow shell; the moment I did that, I felt an intense amount of power force it’s way inside my body. I shut my eyes tight as the power turned to an unbearable weight. Then I fainted.
Suddenly, my eyes opened, I was still underwater, and I was in a coral bed, I must have fallen into it when I passed out. I groaned and held my head in my palm. I was shaking uncontrollably, the last thing I could remember was feeling like a large whale was sitting on me. I felt relieved, yet horribly weakened, I didn’t know if I even had enough strength left to swim back up to the surface. I brushed the pieces of coral away, then turned to see the yellow shell that was next to me. It was probably my one and only chance to get up and out of the water, but I knew that one more blast like that would probably drain all of my energy, and my ability to get to the surface before I ran out of air. The longest I had stayed underwater was about half an hour, and the size of the ocean would determine how long I could stay under for. I guessed I had at least ten minutes left. After a second of hesitation, I grabbed onto the shell and felt the power rush through me like before. Quickly, I zipped upwards and before I knew what had happened, I was on the grass beside the lake. My tail vanished and transformed into legs, still feeling a bit weak, I slowly got to my feet. Suddenly, I realized that I was still holding the shell; it was bone dry and wasn’t affecting me. Maybe it was best that I kept it out of the water.
